Dimensions: 13 x 13 x 0.75 Media: Digital Collage Artist Statement : This piece is taken from the tenth chapter in my ongoing A Virtual Memory audio-visual art project. The album associated with this collage was released in the winter of 2023, made in direct response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Musically, it was crafted from early 2020 up until late 2022; effectively serving as a sonic document of what those years felt like. Artistically, the record’s companion art series (of which this piece is a part) is comprised of various elements taken exclusively from the Smithsonian’s Open Access Archive, collectively serving as a unique rumination on the passage of time and our relationship with it, especially in terms of death, decay, and transformation.
Dimensions: 7.5 x 7.25 x 4.75 Media: cast aluminum Artist Statement : One head looking intently and resolutely in two completely opposite directions, representing inner conflict. The head, the governing mechanism of consciousness and how an individual body thinks and physically functions, is trying to cope with opposing views, this dichotomy within itself. While this is depicted as an individual person, the concept can be extrapolated to what is happening in our country, and humanity globally. My work in sculpture focuses on representations of concepts and qualities of humanness. Seeing my works, I wish viewers to find resonance and relevance of “being human” as I express in physical form facets, abstractions and iterations centering around the mind-body connection and human experience. Working primarily in metal renders weight and material presence to the subject matter.
Dimensions: 12 x 10 Media: Acrylic, watercolor, conte crayon on watercolor paper Artist Statement : Grace and calm are present with this model/muse. She is free.
Dimensions: 20 x 16 x 0.7 Media: oil on canvas Artist Statement : Kokošar is a beautiful uninhabited island of the coast of Croatia in the Adriatic Sea. I loved painting turquoise water and the rocks sparkling through!
Dimensions: 13 x 19 Media: Digital Photography Artist Statement : For this project, I aimed to capture a unique vision through my lens of healing inspired by the thought provoking quote, "Everything grows in the rain." My goal was to create a vibrant heavenscape that symbolizes growth through blooming flowers, reflecting the beauty that can emerge from grief. We all face our own struggles and losses, and each person's journey is distinct. For me, the recent passing of my uncle Bobby and cousin Darren, just a week apart last May, along with my Aunt Pat this past January, deeply influenced my creative process. This work is not just a tribute; it’s a celebration of resilience and the transformative power of nature amidst our sorrows.
Dimensions: 20 x 16 x 1.5 Media: Acrylic, beads, and thread on fabric Artist Statement : I love to explore the interplay between found pattern (in this case, on fabric) and a painted image. The bright orange and red ginkgo pattern fabric was the basis for this piece. In painting the portrait, letting bits of the fabric's pattern remaining exposed, a narrative of strength and resilience began to emerge. An abstract interpretation of ginkgo leaves was embroidered directly onto the piece, incorporating subtle beadwork. It was only after painting and embroidering the work that I researched symbolism around the ginkgo tree, and the story of this portrait was cemented. Ginko trees in Japan survived the atomic bombing at Hiroshima - an extreme example of their tenacity, with their seeds serving as powerful examples of nature recovering after a disaster. The woman portrayed here is "Still Standing," and the viewer can draw from their own experience to fill in the details of the challenges she has faced.
Dimensions: 15.5 x 15.5 x 1.5 Media: Oil on paper Artist Statement : This painting is about the early evening light as it plays across this serene riverside scene.
Dimensions: 58 x 20 x 20 Media: Maps, Wood, Clamp, Vise and Boat Stand
Artist Statement : This is a piece made from my father's wood scraps wrapped with my mother's maps from their various travels. The oscillation of the water and land as well as the wood shapes create a visible topography of their travels.
Dimensions: 16 x 20 Media: Layered oil, cold wax, and Lake Michigan sand Artist Statement : Majestic Sleeping Bear Dunes cliffs, Lake Michigan shoreline on a cold and blustery Fall day.
Dimensions: 9 x 9 x 1.5 Media: Mixed media mosaic. Materials include found metal stator and rotor, Orsoni smalti, gold penny tile, hand-pulled filati, White River shale (Arkansas). Artist Statement : Found metal is always a surprise. The metal in this piece was part of the electrical components of a motor. The center of the piece is made of hand-pulled filati in a rusted bottle cap which is placed on a piece of White River shale.
Dimensions: 14 x 11 x 1 Media: This is a digital photograph through a teleidoscope. Artist Statement : This is a teleidoscope photograph looking up through a blooming redbud at the sky.
Dimensions: 22 x 18 x 1.5 Media: Mixed Media on multi media art board Artist Statement : Applied acrylic ink using bent cardboard as a brush. Thus, the squares formed. Added a neutral heavy body acrylic paint and created patterns for interest.
Made more forms to engage the viewer and add variety. Then used caran d'ache wax crayons to emphasize certain colors. I prefer to let the viewer's filters determine
what they see in my works.
Dimensions: 12 x 9 Media: oil on panel Artist Statement : In January I painted from life every day and experimented with a new, for me, palette that used Permanent Rose as my red. I set up the shell on a silvery tray with an engraved surface and let it be backlit with a spotlight, otherwise seen in natural light. The interior of the shell glowed in pinks and orange tones that are reflected in the tray. The engraving was scraped out with a palette knife to make the tray surface visible.
Dimensions: 15 x 12 x 1 Media: Block print Artist Statement : Who is looking, who is self absorbed and who is ignoring the art around them? As these people move through a lobby in a museum, the goddess sculpture oversees the comings and goings of the crowds.
Dimensions: 9 x 7 Media: Watercolor Artist Statement : The Quahog or hard shell clam is found in the cold waters of the North Atlantic Ocean. Shells are subject to the mechanics of wave action in the tumbling surf. Much of the calcium carbonate shell material is dissolved and easily worn away, and smooth polished fragments are washed up in the tidal zone. The hardiest remaining bits of shell are cherished for their beauty, and display the more resilient indigo, deep magenta and purple pigmented rings I've painted here in a grid presentation, standing on their own as mini-sculptures.
Dimensions: 16 x 16 x 1.5 Media: Digitally manipulated photography Artist Statement : The exterior of a building in Melbourne, Australia, provided the inspiration for this study in triangles, manipulated to look like a vortex.
Dimensions: 11 x 26 x 1 Media: Hand cut and hand dyed layered paper Artist Statement : I combine several layers of lace-like paper cuts to achieve a sculptural effect. My pieces are known for my use of intricate hand cut borders that surround my subjects. My heavily detailed images display dynamic movement and texture. Many of my pieces contain 14-20 layers of paper. Every piece is an engineering challenge. I often start with a small proto-type or “mock up” to test that the paper will lay the way I need it to and that the image will be legible. From there I can start planning out all the layers I will need for the final piece. When it comes to creating patterns, most of what I cut is free hand. I rarely draw out my designs before cutting them. I prefer the spontaneity and fluidity that comes from creating on the spot. I enjoy challenging myself to create new elaborate designs.
