Artist Statement
The Quahog or hard shell clam is found in the cold waters of the North Atlantic Ocean. Shells are subject to the mechanics of wave action in the tumbling surf. Much of the calcium carbonate shell material is dissolved and easily worn away, and smooth polished fragments are washed up in the tidal zone. The hardiest remaining bits of shell are cherished for their beauty, and display the more resilient indigo, deep magenta and purple pigmented rings I've painted here in a grid presentation, standing on their own as mini-sculptures.
